_cartoon_Malaisie_small_size-2A cartoon magazine was seized and banned in Malaysia after its first issue.

“The government’s decision to prosecute the company that published the new cartoon magazine Gedung Kartun for not having a permit is a setback for press freedom in Malaysia. The decision was announced by Jamilah Taib, the head of the interior ministry’s communication unit. The company insists it did get a verbal go-ahead.”

Malaysiakini website refuses to bow to censorship

“Reporters Without Borders today pledged its backing to independent news website Malaysiakini which has decided to resist an order to remove two news videos judged to be “offensive” by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

The commission told the website in a letter on 3 September that it considered the two film clips “offensive” and “intended to upset people, and particularly the Indians”. The penalty for refusing to comply is a fine of 50,000 ringgit (14,325 dollars) and one year in prison.”
